Que Pasa Calabasa? ONE YEAR OLD!!!

This has been, hands down, the BEST year of my life. The most crazy, mixed up, busy, sleep deprived, happy year of my life. And it's 99.9999% because of you my precious boy! So what have you been up to now that you are NO LONGER A BABY?

  • You've had your first major illness :(. It started with a fever, which was by far the worst part. You were scary! You didn't want to move, not even lift your head - a far cry from the boy who NEVER sits still for a second. I came home early from school and you were laying on Papa's chest, just staring at me. You didn't even have the energy to cry out for me like you usually do! A few days after the fever finally broke, you got a rash all over your trunk... ROSEOLA! Mama had that too when she was a baby. THEN, as soon as you started to feel better, you got croup! You had a runny nose and a pretty bad cough for a couple of weeks. I think you got it from one of the other kids at the babysitter.
  • Which brings me to my next topic. You LOVE it at Diana's (babysitter). You love all the kids, you eat well, you nap VERY WELL (like, from 1-3:30 or 4!). You have a little girlfriend named Julia there, whom you give kisses to all the time I hear. Diana takes you and the crew to a play centre and you love it there. She always gives me very full descriptions of your day, and I get such a warm feeling in my tummy hearing her and everyone who meets you lavish praise on you! The only thing she's ever complained about was when you were sick you didn't eat well for her. Other than that, every day she tells me what an angel you were, how good you were, how much the kids love you! I am sooooo happy you are having a good time there, it's one less thing to worry about!
  • Once you got over your illnesses, you started eating more than ever before. You love chicken and pork. You like steak but can take or leave ground beef. Your absolute favourite thing is garlic bread. You love eggs, bananas, and apples (you eat those like an adult! So cute). You like most fruits and berries. Veggies are the biggest struggle. You pick up and chew peas, spinach, lettuce and then spit them out. You'll eat carrots. Diana says she's gotten you to eat green beans and broccoli, but I'll believe it when I see it!
  • You still LOOOOOOVE nursing. You still want to do it every 2-3 hours, even at night. Mama's tired, but I know it won't last forever and someday I will dearly miss all this sweet cuddly bonding time. When you're nursing you always try to squeeze my other boob, which can be embarassing if anyone else is around! Sometimes I also think you are attempting to do gymnastics while still remaining latched on. It's pretty funny! I'm just waiting for you to start sleeping through the night...
  • You wanted NOTHING to do with your birthday cake. You looked afraid of it. You didn't want to touch it. You did have it for dessert (sans icing) every night the week after your party though. Apparently you take after Mama and love you some carrot cake! Yum.
  • You love giving kisses. To anyone who asks for it! But especially to me and Papa. The best is when you do it without asking! Warms my heart.
  • You've learned the head gestures for no and yes. No came first, yes happened yesterday. So now anytime we ask you something, you shake your head 'nooooooo'. Or, if you don't want to do something, etc. You're a smart kid!
  • You clap when Papa says "aplaudez" (not sure if I spelled that right, Spanish). Or if we say "Bravo, bravissimo, bravo!".
  • When we say 'peek a boo!', you cover your ears. Must work on that one. LOL!
  • You can do the 'blow' action like blowing out a candle, also with spanish instructions. Any toy/object that has some kind of hole/tube through it, you now pick up and blow air through the hole!
  • You 'woowooowoo' (woof) when you see a dog over skype, on tv, or one of your stuffed animals!
  • You consistently wave hi and bye to people.
  • You can throw the soccer ball overhead. You are very good at throwing it in the direction you want too. You still love 'running' after it and kicking it. I've got to find you a little net!
  • You are a ham. You love to make us laugh and invent little games or do funny things to do so. Like last night when we skyped on my iphone with Oma and Grandpa, you would give the phone a kiss (lick), do a figure eight around the laundry basket, come back for a kiss, then repeat. Oh, and I can't forget to mention that you have great comedic timing - you definitely pause and look back to see if we're laughing!!!
  • You definitely have your own little language. Full of different sounds and inflections for different meanings. It's definitely no longer meaningless babbling. I've got most of it interpreted. It's pretty cool. You are also starting to say 'Uh Oh!' whenever you drop something from your highchair. You also say 'mama' (only when you're being whiny) and 'wow/whoa'  when you see something you think is cool.
  • Brently got you a cool walker toy for your birthday and you use that all the time to walk around the house! but....
  • YOU TOOK YOUR FIRST OFFICIAL, INDEPENDENT STEPS ON NOVEMBER 27, 2011!!! You were sooooo excited after that that you just went around the living room like a tasmanian devil, pulling up on furniture, letting go, and then leaping to the ground and laughing. This was at bedtime. It was pretty freaking funny. Then, last night we got you to independently stand, clap, and dance at the same time. By the end of the week I'm positive you will no longer be crawling at all.
Well my sweet boy, I hope I haven't forgotten anything! You're changing and growing up so fast that I'm sure I have. It is a pure joy to be your Mama, and I can't wait to see what year two has in store for us! Love you so very much, mi patito preciocito! xoxo
